Employability Skills Lead, Emotional Literacy Support Assistant Trained, Sport & Health Specialist

The mantra of Masters Rugby League reminds us, "You don't stop playing because you get old, you get old because you stop playing", and this has never been truer for me over the past 12 months. I embrace the fact I was born in the historic year of 1966 as it has blessed me with a lifetime of experiences to share, knowledge to impart and the communication skills to facilitate. I have taken the educational ball in both hands and thoroughly enjoyed my first 12 months with Falcons Learning.

With over 35 years working in heavy industry, I have a number of skills and experiences suited to my multifaceted role, with NEBOSH Certification to support my safety responsibilities and decades of creating and presenting industrial product training to enhance my teaching. Years of high-level negotiation, honing non-verbal communication and good listening skills coupled with guiding my own children through their teenage years have given me a solid grounding for my Emotional Literacy Support Assistant role and a lifelong interest in engineering, from technical Lego to classic car ownership makes me a useful partner for our Motor Vehicle Workshop Manager.

Always a keen sportsman but without any natural flair I have long believed in the power of teamwork, "doing the hard yards" and "it's the work you put in when no-ones watching that makes the difference on the day", and hope that my example continues to offer a positive direction for our Falcons learners.

I began my career in education after completing my PGCE in Food Technology at Sheffield Hallam University. From the start, I was drawn to the rewarding experience of supporting individuals as they build confidence, develop new skills, and realize their potential. Seeing others progress and reach milestones in their personal and professional journeys is something I find incredibly fulfilling.

Alongside my work in education, I have a strong interest in health and wellbeing, particularly nutrition and movement. Outside of work, you’ll usually find me at reformer Pilates, out walking my dogs, or exploring ways to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

My main value in life is my family. I have a partner and two young children, and they are my biggest motivation. Everything I do is focused on providing them with the best life I possibly can. Because of this, I take pride in working hard, being reliable, and always striving to improve myself both personally and professionally. I believe in setting a strong example through dedication, responsibility, and commitment, both for my family and in the workplace.

In my younger years, I was an avid traveller and spent time exploring much of Europe. During this time, I hitchhiked and worked in a variety of places, which allowed me to experience different cultures and meet people from many backgrounds. These experiences helped me develop independence, resilience, and strong communication skills that I still carry with me today.

I have worked extensively in the public sector, including roles as an entertainer, sports coach, staff trainer, and mentor. Each of these experiences has helped me develop strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills, which have ultimately led me to my role at Falcons.

Working at Falcons has given me the opportunity to support young people in reaching their potential, which is something I find incredibly rewarding. During my own time in school, I struggled with focus and found that mainstream education was not the right fit for me. Because of this, I am able to relate to some of the challenges that some students here may face. This allows me to approach them with understanding and empathy and provide the support and encouragement they need to succeed.

What I enjoy most about working at Falcons is the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of young people. Being able to support students, help build their confidence, and see them progress is incredibly rewarding. It is great to be part of a team that is focused on helping students grow and reach their full potential.

Outside of Falcons, I enjoy spending quality time with my family. We often go on bike rides, walks with the dog, and I value simply being present and making the most of time with my children.

In my spare time, I also enjoy socialising with friends and being involved in my local community. I play for the local pub pool team and also for a local football team, which helps me stay active and maintain a good balance outside of work.

My path to Falcons was driven by my personal experience navigating life with my own children, on the SEN register at their mainstream school. This first-hand journey gave me a deep appreciation for authenticity and resilience, values I bring to my work every day.

I especially love the hands-on lessons here (and I’m a big fan of the school lunches!), as they allow for real connection and practical progress. Outside of work, I stay energized and grounded by hitting the gym or hiking out in nature.

The most important thing in my life is my family and my partner. They are my biggest support system and mean the world to me. I also believe that having the right mindset is really important in life. I try to be someone who brings positive energy into a room and helps brighten people’s day.My favourite quote is, “The noblest art is that of making others happy,” and I genuinely try to live by that every day. Being able to support others, make people smile, and create a positive environment is something I value greatly.

Working at Falcons has genuinely changed my life. I have met colleagues who have become close friends, and it has been incredible to watch learners grow and develop over time. Seeing their progress and confidence build is really rewarding. Falcons is also a place that encourages you to improve and develop yourself. It motivates you to want to do better and keep learning. I’m always looking for ways to grow, progress, and gain new knowledge within Falcons, and I’m grateful to be part of such a supportive environment.

I never originally anticipated becoming a Teaching Assistant or working at Falcons. After leaving college with three Distinction* grades in Business, IT, and Sport, I planned to go to university and pursue something related to business. I did start university, but this was during the COVID period and I gradually lost my passion for it, which eventually led me to leave. After that, I worked in security for around four years. During that time I met a wide range of people and gained valuable life experience. Eventually, I discovered Falcons and started volunteering a few days a week. I quickly realised how much I enjoyed being part of the environment. I was later offered an interview, got the job, and I’ve never looked back since.

Outside of Falcons, I really enjoy cooking. I cook a meal for my partner and myself most days, and I find it a great way to relax and unwind (apart from the washing up!). I enjoy trying new recipes and experimenting with different meals.I also love going for walks in the Peak District. Getting up early and catching the sunrise there is something I really enjoy – it’s a great way to clear my mind and start the day. I like to try to go away and have breaks with my partner when possible, we have a few holidays booked for this year and I can’t wait for it, a great way to clear the mind.

I value kindness, compassion and helping others reach their full potential. I strongly believe that everyone can succeed in life when they are supported and encouraged in the right way. I am passionate about guiding students to be the best version of themselves and providing a nurturing environment where they can grow both academically and personally. I also value being someone others can rely on – creating a safe, supportive space where people feel listened to, respected and encouraged.

I enjoy working at Falcons because it is truly like no other school. Our learners are at the heart of everything we do, and we value them not only for their achievements but for who they are as individuals. We listen to their voices and understand that every situation is different. Falcons is a place where everyone can belong, and we always strive to be the best we can be for our students.

My background is in Criminology, and I previously worked within the criminal justice sector supporting vulnerable adults. After later working in the inclusion team within a mainstream school, I discovered a real passion for working with young people and supporting them as they develop into young adults. I want to make a positive difference in young people’s lives and help them realise their potential. I believe every young person deserves support and opportunities, regardless of their background, which is why working in an independent school like Falcons is so important to me.

Outside of Falcons, I enjoy spending time with my family and pets, as well as reading. I also enjoy going for walks and travelling when I can. I particularly enjoy visiting places like Alton Towers for a fun day out and experiencing the rides. Spending time with the people I care about and making new memories is something I really value in my free time.

I feel privileged to have joined Falcons Learning, an organisation that I have worked with since its inception. Falcons has developed beyond recognition and I am excited to be part of the journey moving forwards in a school which is inclusive, and gives students the opportunity to succeed and flourish. I am child-centred in my approach, supportive and recognize and respect that we are all different, something which should be celebrated.

I have extensive experience working with the most vulnerable people throughout our region and am passionate about safeguarding and ensuring the wellbeing of all members of our community.

For me, education has always been about offering the next generation a chance to be their best selves and this means equal importance being placed on their academic, social and health learning.
